A day about the microwave oven, the kitchen box that heats food with invisible waves, and the snacks and leftovers it handles every day.

National Microwave Oven Day falls on Sunday, December 6, 2026. That is 40 days away.
The microwave oven is the humming box on the counter that warms coffee, softens butter and rescues last night's dinner. It heats food with microwaves, a kind of radio wave that makes water molecules in the food move faster and warm up.
That is why a bowl of soup gets hot while the plate under it sometimes stays cool, and why food can be scalding at the edges and cold in the middle. Many models have a turntable to spread the heat around. Stirring halfway through does the same job by hand.
Most people use one for the plain tasks: popcorn, reheated rice, a mug of tea that went cold during a phone call. But the microwave has a quieter range than it gets credit for. It can steam vegetables in a covered dish, cook a mug cake in a couple of minutes, or melt chocolate gently if you go in short bursts.
Metal is the one firm rule. Foil and metal trim can spark, so glass, ceramic and containers marked microwave safe are the usual choices. Covering a dish loosely keeps splatters off the ceiling of the oven, which is the part nobody enjoys cleaning.
The beep at the end has become one of the most familiar sounds in an American kitchen, and plenty of people open the door a second before it goes off.
