National Miners Day

Commemorative · History · December 6

National Miners Day recognizes the people who work underground and in quarries, digging coal, metals and stone, and the history of mining in America.

National Miners Day falls on Sunday, December 6, 2026. That is 40 days away.

Miners dig out the coal, metal ores, salt and stone that much of daily life quietly depends on. National Miners Day recognizes those workers, past and present, and the long history of mining in American towns.

The work has always been hard and often dangerous. Underground miners spend shifts in tunnels lit mostly by the lamps on their helmets, while others work in open pits and quarries with enormous machines. Whole communities grew up around mines, with company towns, union halls and family stories passed down through generations.

Many people mark the day by remembering miners who lost their lives on the job, and by thanking the ones still working. Mining regions sometimes hold memorial gatherings or open local history displays. For others it is a chance to learn where the materials in a phone, a kitchen counter or a road actually come from.

Mining museums and preserved mine sites exist in many states, and some offer tours that go underground. Standing in a tunnel with the lights switched off, even briefly, gives a sense of how complete the darkness is down there.

The canary in a cage, once carried into coal mines as an early warning of dangerous gas, is still the image many people picture first.
