A little reason to celebrate

National Military Brats Day

Family · Commemorative · April 30

Recognizing the children who grow up in military families, moving often, changing schools and making a home wherever the next posting takes them.

National Military Brats Day

National Military Brats Day falls on Friday, April 30, 2027. That is 185 days away.

Military brat is the long-standing, affectionate name for a child raised in a military family. The word gets used with pride by the people it describes, many of whom keep using it well into adulthood.

Growing up this way often means moving every few years. A kid might start the school year in one state and finish it in another, or spend part of childhood overseas near a base. There are new classrooms, new neighbors and new accents to learn, and a lot of packing tape. Many brats get good at walking into a room full of strangers, and some can name the exact feel of a base commissary or the sound of a morning bugle call.

There is a harder side too. A parent may be deployed for months, and goodbyes to friends come often. Brats tend to describe a mix of independence and a quiet longing for one place to call home, and plenty of them answer the question "Where are you from?" with a pause and a list.

The day is usually marked by sharing stories. Grown brats post photos from old duty stations, swap memories of favorite bases, and reconnect with friends they met at three different schools. Families with kids at home may use it to thank their children for the moves and the patience.

Ask a former brat how many houses they lived in before high school, and they will usually have to count on their fingers.
