A day for the classic toy potato with removable eyes, ears, mouth and hat, and the odd faces people build with it.

National Mr. Potato Head Day falls on Friday, April 30, 2027. That is 185 days away.

Mr. Potato Head is a plastic potato with holes in it. Into those holes go eyes, ears, a nose, a mouth, arms, feet and usually a hat. The fun is in deciding where each piece goes, and then deciding again.

The toy works because nothing has to be right. Ears can go where the eyes belong. A mustache can sit on top of the head like a small brown cloud. Small children like the push and pop of the pieces, and older kids and adults tend to build faces that look like someone they know.

Many of the parts store inside the potato's back, through a little door. That hatch is the reason so many sets have survived years in toy boxes with most of their pieces still together, though a stray ear almost always ends up under the couch.

People mark the day by digging out an old set, building a family of faces on the kitchen table, or making a version from a real potato and whatever is in the drawer. Toothpicks, buttons and bottle caps make a decent nose. A real potato does start to sprout eventually, which gives the character a new hairstyle.

• Make a potato character from a real potato and household odds and ends.
• Have each person in the family build a face of someone else.
• Look under the couch for missing pieces.
• Share a photo of your best potato face with a friend.
