National Milk Chocolate Day falls on Wednesday, July 28, 2027. That is 274 days away.
Milk chocolate is chocolate with milk added, usually as milk powder or condensed milk, along with cocoa butter, cocoa solids and sugar. The milk softens the bitterness of the cocoa and gives the bar its pale brown color and creamy, mellow taste.
It melts easily on the tongue, which is a big part of its charm. Cocoa butter melts close to body temperature, so a square left on the tongue turns smooth without much chewing. Flavors vary more than people expect. Some bars lean toward caramel, some taste of malt or honey, and some keep a stronger cocoa note.
Most people mark the day the obvious way, by eating some. A side by side tasting makes it more interesting. Break a few squares from two or three different bars, let each one melt slowly, and see which notes come through. Milk chocolate also turns up in hot cocoa, cookies, s'mores and chocolate covered pretzels, where its sweetness pairs well with salt.
For baking or melting, gentle heat matters. Milk chocolate scorches more easily than dark chocolate because of its milk and sugar, so low heat and frequent stirring work best. Stored in a cool, dry place away from strong smells, a bar keeps its gloss. A dusty white film on old chocolate is usually just cocoa butter or sugar rising to the surface, and the chocolate is still safe to eat.
