A day for waterparks: the slides, wave pools and lazy rivers where people spend warm days getting splashed on purpose.

National Waterpark Day falls on Wednesday, July 28, 2027. That is 274 days away.
Waterparks are amusement parks built around water. Instead of roller coasters and carousels, they have tube slides, wave pools, splash pads and lazy rivers that carry floating visitors in a slow loop.
The experience has its own rhythm. You climb a long staircase with a foam mat or inner tube under your arm, wait at the top while a lifeguard watches the slide clear, then drop into a twisting chute and land in a pool with a splash. Then you do it again. Between rides there is the warm concrete underfoot, the smell of sunscreen, and the periodic horn that tells the wave pool its waves are coming.
Many waterparks are outdoors and open only in warm months, which gives a visit a summery feel. Indoor waterparks keep the slides running all year under a big roof, often attached to a hotel.
People mark the day by going, of course, but also by remembering. Almost everyone has a favorite slide from childhood, or a story about the one ride they talked themselves out of at the top of the stairs. Families and friends go together, and some people spend the whole afternoon drifting on the lazy river without ever seeing the tallest slide up close.
If you go, a pair of water shoes helps on hot pavement, and a waterproof pouch keeps a phone dry. The lazy river is usually the calmest seat in the park.
