National Mulled Wine Day falls on Wednesday, March 3, 2027. That is 127 days away.
Mulled wine is red wine warmed slowly with spices, citrus and a little sweetness. Cinnamon sticks, cloves and orange peel are the usual company, with star anise, nutmeg or cardamom joining in some kitchens. The point is to heat it gently, never to a boil, so the wine stays round and the spices have time to settle in.
The smell arrives before the drink does. A pot on low heat fills a room with something close to a spice cabinet left open near a fireplace. It is served in mugs or heatproof glasses, often with a slice of orange floating on top, and it tends to be sipped slowly by people standing close together.
Many European countries have their own version. Germany has glühwein, the Nordic countries have glögg, often served with raisins and almonds, and in Britain it shows up at winter gatherings and markets. Recipes vary a lot from house to house, and most cooks adjust the sugar and spice by taste rather than by the book.
Making it at home is simple. A modest bottle of fruity red works well, since the spices will cover any subtlety a pricier wine might have. Some people add a splash of brandy, and others leave it out entirely. For anyone skipping alcohol, the same spices simmered in apple cider or grape juice make a warm drink with much the same smell.
Leftover mulled wine keeps in the fridge for a day or two and can be warmed again, though the cloves grow stronger the longer they sit.
