Nature photography is the habit of pointing a camera at the living world and waiting for it to do something interesting. The subject might be a mountain range, or it might be a beetle on a fence post. Both count.

Most of the work is patience. Light changes the whole mood of a scene, which is why many photographers like the soft, low light just after sunrise and just before sunset. Animals rarely pose, so people learn to sit still, move slowly and let the bird come back to the branch. A phone is plenty to start with. Plenty of good nature photos are taken within a short walk of someone's front door.

The day is usually marked by heading outside with whatever camera is handy and seeing what turns up. Some people choose a theme, like textures, reflections or a single tree photographed from every side. Others revisit an old favorite spot and try to see it differently. Sharing the results with friends, or simply looking back through them at the end of the day, is part of the pleasure.

One habit that experienced nature photographers share is giving wildlife space. Staying on trails, keeping a respectful distance and leaving plants and nests as they were means the scene is still there for the next person, and for the animals who live in it.

Close subjects reward a second look. A dandelion seed head, photographed from a few inches away, turns out to be a small, careful sphere of parachutes.

Ways to celebrate

• Take a slow walk and photograph ten things you usually pass by.
• Try shooting the same view at sunrise and at sunset.
• Get close to a flower, leaf or bark and photograph its texture.
• Share a favorite nature photo with a friend or family member.
• Watch birds from a distance and photograph them without approaching.
