National Lobster Day falls on Saturday, September 25, 2027. That is 333 days away.
Also marked on June 15.
Lobster is a shellfish with a hard shell, a long muscular tail and, in the familiar American kind, two large front claws. It lives on the rocky ocean floor and is caught in baited traps, then cooked and eaten for its sweet, firm meat.
A live lobster is usually a mottled greenish brown or bluish color. It turns bright red only when cooked, which is why the red one on the plate looks so different from the one in the tank.
Eating a whole lobster is a project. There are crackers for the claws, a small fork for the narrow spots, a bowl for empty shells and usually a bib. The tail holds the most meat, the claws are close behind, and people who are thorough work through the legs too. Melted butter and a wedge of lemon sit nearby.
Not every lobster meal needs tools. A lobster roll puts the meat in a toasted bun, either cold with mayonnaise or warm with butter, and people tend to have firm opinions about which is correct. Lobster also turns up in bisque, a smooth, rich soup, and in macaroni and cheese.
On the coast, a lobster dinner often comes with corn on the cob and potatoes, eaten at a picnic table with paper napkins that are never quite enough.
