A little reason to celebrate

National Pizza Day

Food · February 9

National Pizza Day is about the flatbread topped with sauce, cheese and almost anything else, and the many ways Americans bake, fold and share it.

National Pizza Day

National Pizza Day falls on Tuesday, February 9, 2027. That is 105 days away.

Pizza starts as a round of yeasted dough, stretched thin or left thick, then topped and baked hot enough to blister the edges. The classic version carries tomato sauce and mozzarella. After that, the toppings are up to whoever holds the spoon.

In the United States pizza comes in a lot of shapes. There are wide, foldable slices sold by the piece, deep pans with a tall crust that eats more like a pie, square slices with crisp corners, and thin crackery rounds cut into small squares. Many towns have a local style that residents defend with some heat, usually over the crust.

Most people mark the day the obvious way, by eating pizza. Some order from a favorite neighborhood place. Others make it at home, which is easier than it sounds. A simple dough of flour, water, yeast and salt needs time to rise more than it needs skill, and a very hot oven does much of the remaining work.

Toppings are where the arguments live. Pepperoni is a common favorite. Mushrooms, onions, peppers and sausage are steady choices, and pineapple still starts conversations at the table.

Cold pizza the next morning has its own following, and the crust often holds up better than you'd expect.
