A little reason to celebrate

A day for the Pokémon franchise and its fans, from catching creatures in video games to trading cards and watching the animated series.

Pokémon Day falls on Saturday, February 27, 2027. That is 123 days away.
Pokémon is a franchise built around fictional creatures that people catch, raise and battle. It spans video games, a trading card game, an animated series, films and a great deal of merchandise. The day is marked around the world, and in the United States too, by people who grew up with it and people just starting out.
The basic idea is easy to explain and hard to finish. Each species has a type, such as fire, water or grass, and types are strong or weak against one another, a bit like rock, paper, scissors with more paperwork. Many creatures evolve into new forms as they grow. The list of species keeps getting longer with each new game, which is why the old promise to catch them all has stayed slightly out of reach.
Fans mark the day in their own ways. Some replay the first game they ever owned. Others sort through card binders, play a match with a friend, or rewatch early episodes of the show. Families often find that a parent and a child can talk about the same creature for a surprisingly long time.
Pikachu, the small yellow electric mouse, is the face most people know, even people who have never played. Ask a longtime fan which creature they chose first, though, and you will usually get a firm answer and a story about it.
