A day for strawberries: the bright red berry eaten fresh, baked into shortcake, stirred into jam and picked by the basket.

National Strawberry Day falls on Saturday, February 27, 2027. That is 123 days away.
Strawberries are the red, heart-shaped fruit with their seeds on the outside. Each one is studded with tiny yellow specks, and those specks are the plant's actual fruits, each holding a seed. Botanists do not count the strawberry as a true berry at all, which has never stopped anyone from calling it one.
A ripe strawberry is red all the way to the shoulders, soft but not mushy, and fragrant enough that you can often smell a box before you see it. The plants grow low to the ground and send out runners, thin stems that root and start new plants nearby. That is why a strawberry patch tends to spread on its own.
Most people mark the day by eating them. Some keep it simple, a bowl of sliced berries with a little sugar or cream. Others go for strawberry shortcake, with biscuits or sponge cake, whipped cream and berries that have sat long enough to make their own syrup. Jam, smoothies, chocolate-dipped berries and a handful tossed onto a salad all count too.
Strawberries do not keep ripening once they are picked, so the ones that look pale at the store will stay that way. Rinse them just before eating rather than when you get home, since moisture makes them soften faster. Leave the green caps on until after washing, and the berries will hold less water.
