A day for polka dots, the evenly spaced circles found on dresses, ties, mugs and more, and for wearing or spotting the pattern wherever it turns up.

National Polka Dot Day falls on Friday, January 22, 2027. That is 87 days away.
Polka dots are a pattern of round dots, usually all the same size, spaced evenly across a plain background. They can be tiny and tidy or big enough to see from across a room, and they show up on everything from dresses and scarves to umbrellas, teacups and wrapping paper.
The pattern has an odd talent for changing mood with scale. Small white dots on navy look neat enough for an office. Large red dots on white look like a picnic, or a clown, depending on who is wearing them. Swap the colors and the same idea reads as playful, retro or formal.
Marking the day is mostly a matter of putting dots where people can see them. Some wear a dotted shirt, tie or pair of socks. Others bake cookies with candy dots, paint dots on a rock or a flowerpot, or let children press a fingertip into paint and fill a page with circles. Spotting dots in the wild works too, once you start looking, they appear on mushrooms, ladybugs and the backs of fabric store bolts.
The name is often linked to the polka, a lively dance that was very popular when the pattern got its name, though the dots themselves have no steps to learn. A fabric with dots that are very small and close together is sometimes called pin dot, and the largest ones are sometimes called coin dots.
