A day for Rottweilers, the powerful, loyal working dogs with black and tan coats and a soft spot for their families.
National Rottweiler Day falls on Monday, June 28, 2027. That is 244 days away.
The Rottweiler is a big, muscular dog with a broad head, a black coat and rust-colored markings on the face, chest and legs. Males often weigh 95 to 135 pounds, so this is a dog you notice. It also has a reputation for being steady, confident, and deeply attached to its own people.
The breed traces back to the German town of Rottweil, where the dogs drove cattle to market and guarded the butchers' money on the way home. Later they worked as police and service dogs, and they still pull carts, herd, and do search and rescue work. Plenty of them are simply family pets that follow someone from room to room.
A dog this strong needs training and company. Early socialization, steady rules and daily exercise go a long way, and a bored Rottweiler can find its own projects. Many are goofy at home and love to lean against a leg or lie across a foot. Their coat is short and easy to keep up, but they do shed.
People mark the day by spending time with the dogs they love. Owners post photos, practice a new trick, or head out for a long walk. Others read about the breed or look into Rottweiler rescue groups, which place dogs in new homes.
Ask a Rottweiler owner about their dog and you will likely hear that it thinks it is a lap dog.
