A little reason to celebrate

Safety Razor Day

History ยท December 2

Safety Razor Day looks at the guarded razor that made home shaving simpler, and at the people who still prefer its weight and simple design.

Safety Razor Day

Safety Razor Day falls on Wednesday, December 2, 2026. That is 36 days away.

A safety razor is a shaving tool with a guard between the blade and the skin. The guard exposes only a thin edge, which made shaving far less nerve-racking than working with an open straight razor.

The classic version holds a thin, double-edged steel blade clamped inside a metal head. When one side dulls, you flip the blade to use the other edge. When both are worn, you swap in a new blade. There are no plastic cartridges and no swiveling heads, just a handle, a head and a blade.

People who use one often talk about the ritual. Shaving cream gets whipped into a lather with a brush, the razor is held at a shallow angle, and the strokes are short and unhurried. The heavier handle does much of the work, so pressing down is unnecessary. Some people use a single pass. Others make two or three, going in different directions.

Old safety razors turn up in junk shops, at estate sales and in family drawers, and many of them still work after a good cleaning. Some have a twist-to-open head that splits like a pair of tiny doors when you turn the knob at the bottom of the handle.

Used blades are sharp even when they are too dull to shave with. Many owners keep a small metal tin with a slot in the lid and drop each old blade into it.
