A little reason to celebrate

National Sisters Day

Family ยท The first Sunday in August

A day for sisters, by birth, by marriage or by choice, and for the long, particular friendship that comes with having one.

National Sisters Day

National Sisters Day falls on Sunday, August 1, 2027. That is 278 days away.

National Sisters Day honors sisters of every kind: older, younger, twins, half sisters, stepsisters, sisters-in-law and the friends who became family somewhere along the way. It falls on the first Sunday in August.

A sister often keeps the other half of your history. She knows the song you both sang in the back seat until a parent begged for silence, the bedroom you divided with a line of tape down the carpet, the handwriting on notes passed under a door. Ask two sisters about the same summer and you may get two versions, each told with total confidence.

The relationship changes shape over the years. Sisters can be rivals at ten, strangers at nineteen and each other's first phone call at forty. Many spend years borrowing clothes without asking and then, later, borrowing advice the same way.

Most people mark the day simply. A text with an old photo. A long call with no particular point. Breakfast out, a walk, an afternoon on someone's porch. Sisters who live far apart sometimes watch the same movie at the same time and narrate it to each other by message.

For anyone whose sister has died, the day can be quieter. Some people visit a favorite place of hers, wear something she gave them, or tell a younger relative one story about her they have never heard.

If you share a box of old letters or a shoebox of photos, this is when it tends to come down from the closet shelf.
