National S'mores Day falls on Tuesday, August 10, 2027. That is 287 days away.
A s'more is a sandwich with three parts. Two graham crackers hold a square of milk chocolate and a marshmallow toasted until it puffs and goes soft inside. The heat of the marshmallow melts the chocolate a little, and the whole thing holds together just long enough to eat.
Most people learn to make them around a campfire or a backyard fire pit. The marshmallow goes on the end of a long stick or skewer and turns slowly over the coals, not the tall flames. Patient toasters aim for an even golden brown. Others let it catch, blow it out and call the charred shell the best part. Both camps tend to have strong opinions.
At home, a broiler does the job well. Set the crackers on a baking sheet, top each with chocolate and a marshmallow, and slide them under the heat for a minute or so. Keep the oven door in view the whole time, because marshmallows go from toasted to burnt very quickly. Add the top cracker once they come out.
Outdoors, a fire pit works best with an adult keeping an eye on things, a clear space around it and water nearby. Long sticks keep hands back from the heat, and letting a hot marshmallow cool for a moment saves a burned tongue.
The name is usually explained as a squeeze of "some more," which is what people tend to ask for after the first one.
