A little reason to celebrate

World Lion Day

Animal · Nature · August 10

World Lion Day turns attention to lions, the social big cats of African grasslands, and how people in the US learn about and appreciate them.

World Lion Day

World Lion Day falls on Tuesday, August 10, 2027. That is 287 days away.

Lions are the only big cats that live in groups. A pride is usually a set of related females, their cubs and a few adult males, sharing a territory on open grassland or savanna. World Lion Day is an international observance, and it is marked in the United States too, mostly by zoos, classrooms and people who simply like lions.

Most wild lions live in parts of Africa south of the Sahara, with a small population in India. The females do much of the hunting, often working together to bring down zebra, antelope or buffalo. Males are known for their manes, which can range from pale gold to nearly black. Then there is the sleeping. Lions rest for most of the day, which makes watching one in person a lesson in patience.

The roar is the part people remember. It carries a long way across open country and helps a pride keep track of its members and warn off rivals. Lions also make quieter sounds, like grunts and soft moaning calls, that are easy to miss unless you stand close and listen.

People mark the day by visiting a zoo, watching a nature documentary or reading about how lions live. Many zoos with lions hold talks or keeper chats, and those are a good chance to ask questions. Teachers sometimes use the day to talk about grassland food webs, where lions sit near the top.

A lion cub is born with faint spots on its coat. They usually fade as it grows, though some adults keep a trace of them on the legs and belly.
