A little reason to celebrate
Thesaurus Day
Hobby ยท January 18
Thesaurus Day celebrates the reference book of synonyms and antonyms, and the pleasure of hunting for exactly the right word.
Thesaurus Day falls on Monday, January 18, 2027. That is 83 days away.
A thesaurus is a book of words grouped by meaning. Look up one word and it hands you a cluster of others that mean nearly the same thing, often with a few opposites listed nearby. Dictionaries tell you what a word means. A thesaurus tells you what else you could have said.
The key word there is nearly. Synonyms are rarely perfect twins. "Thin," "slender" and "scrawny" describe the same shape with three different attitudes, and part of the fun of browsing a thesaurus is feeling those shades shift. Writers reach for one when a word keeps repeating on the page, or when the obvious choice is close but not quite right.
Paper editions come in two broad styles. Some are arranged alphabetically, like a dictionary. Others group words by idea, so that a single section might gather everything to do with light, or noise, or money, and you wander from one concept to the next. Digital versions now sit inside most word processors, one right click away.
People mark the day in quiet, wordy ways. Some swap a tired phrase for a fresher one. Some play word games or pick a new term to use all week. Others simply open a thesaurus at random and read, which is more absorbing than it sounds.
The classic caution still holds. A word pulled from a list should be checked in context before it goes into an important sentence, because "mature" and "aged" do not mean the same thing on a wine label and a birthday card.
Ways to celebrate
- Open a thesaurus to a random page and read for ten minutes.
- Replace one overused word in your writing with a sharper synonym.
- Pick an unfamiliar word and use it in conversation this week.
- Play a synonym chain game with friends or family.
- Look for an idea-arranged thesaurus at your local library.
