A day for giving pets a little extra: a favorite snack, a longer walk, a new toy or simply more of your time and attention.

National Treat Your Pet Day falls on Friday, October 30, 2026. That is 3 days away.
A treat, for a pet, can be almost anything that feels like a bonus. A biscuit counts. So does an extra ten minutes at the park, a fresh blanket in the sunny spot, or a slow brushing session on the couch.
Dogs tend to read treats as food and adventure. Cats often prefer a warm lap, a crinkly toy or a cardboard box that arrived for someone else. Rabbits and guinea pigs perk up at a handful of fresh leafy greens, and many birds like a new perch or something safe to shred. The trick is noticing what your own animal already loves and offering a bit more of it.
Food treats are the easy choice, and pets rarely complain. Still, a small portion goes a long way, and treats made for that kind of animal are the safe bet. Some human foods that seem harmless, like chocolate, grapes and onions, can make dogs and cats sick, so it helps to keep the people snacks on the people plate.
Plenty of the best treats cost nothing. A sniff walk, where the dog sets the pace and stops at every interesting patch of grass, can tire a dog out more than a brisk loop around the block. A cat may get just as much from a few minutes chasing a string toy before dinner.
Time is the treat most pets want. Sitting on the floor at their level, with no phone in hand, is something most animals seem to notice right away.
