A day for the people who watch the sky, read the thermometer and write down what the weather actually did, from backyard hobbyists to volunteer spotters.

National Weather Observers Day falls on Tuesday, May 4, 2027. That is 189 days away.
Weather observing is the practice of watching the sky and recording what happens: the temperature, the rain, the wind, the clouds. Some people do it with professional instruments. Many do it with a rain gauge on a fence post and a notebook by the back door.
The appeal is partly patience. A single morning reading means little, but a season of them starts to tell a story about your own patch of ground. You learn that your yard runs a little colder than the forecast suggests, or that the storms tend to arrive from one direction. Forecasts describe a region. An observer describes a place.
The tools are simple and old. A thermometer measures temperature, a barometer measures air pressure, and a rain gauge collects precipitation so it can be measured. Clouds need no tool at all, only a name. Cumulus are the puffy, heaped ones, cirrus are thin and wispy and high, and stratus spread across the sky in a flat gray layer.
Marking the day can be as modest as stepping outside at the same hour and writing down what you see. Volunteer observer networks in the United States collect readings from ordinary people, and those reports help fill in the gaps between official weather stations. Even a private log has value to the person who keeps it, especially years later when someone insists it never used to snow like that.
The best notebooks include the small remarks too: frost on the car, the smell before rain, the first evening warm enough to leave a window open.
