A little reason to celebrate

National Zipper Day

History ยท April 29

A look at the zipper, the interlocking fastener on jackets, bags and jeans, and how this everyday device actually works.

National Zipper Day

National Zipper Day falls on Thursday, April 29, 2027. That is 184 days away.

Pull a zipper and two rows of small teeth lock together as neatly as a handshake. Pull it back and they let go. The zipper is one of those inventions most people use several times a day without ever looking at closely.

The idea is simple once you see it. Each tooth has a little bump on one side and a hollow on the other. The slider, the piece you hold, is shaped like a narrow Y. As it moves up, it guides the teeth from both sides into the same channel at a slight angle so they hook into each other. Moving it down, a small wedge inside the slider pries them apart again. Stops at the top and bottom keep the slider from running off the end.

Zippers come in a few main kinds. Metal ones show up on jeans and work jackets. Molded plastic teeth are common on outdoor gear. Coil zippers, made from a continuous spiral of nylon, bend easily and turn up on tents, pillow covers and dresses. Some open fully at the bottom, like a coat, and some stay joined, like a pocket.

The day invites a closer look at that little machine on your sleeve. Many stuck zippers come loose with patience: work the slider gently back and forth and check for a caught thread. A teeth row that keeps splitting often means the slider has worn and spread slightly, which a tailor can usually replace without swapping the whole zipper.

The tab you pull has a name of its own, the pull, and on a lot of bags it is the first part to snap off.
