A little reason to celebrate

404 Day

Fun ยท April 4

A day about the 404 error, the web's familiar "Not Found" message, and the odd, clever pages people build to soften a dead end.

404 Day

404 Day falls on Sunday, April 4, 2027. That is 159 days away.

A 404 is the message a web server sends back when it cannot find the page you asked for. The address reached the right site, but nothing lives there anymore, or nothing ever did. Browsers show it as "404 Not Found," and most people have met it after clicking an old link or mistyping a URL.

The number comes from a family of status codes that servers use to report how a request went. Codes in the 400s mean something went wrong on the request side, and 404 is the most famous of them by a wide margin. A page might have been renamed, moved or deleted, and the link pointing to it simply never heard the news.

What makes the error interesting is what sites do with it. Plenty of designers treat the 404 page as a tiny stage. Some show a lost astronaut or a confused animal, some offer a search box, and some just apologize in a friendly voice. The best ones admit the mistake and then point you somewhere useful, which is more than many real dead ends manage.

People mark the day by hunting for clever error pages, sharing favorites with friends, or tidying up their own broken links. If you run a site or a blog, it is a chance to test old links and give your own 404 page a little personality.

A good error page usually includes a link back to the home page, so even a wrong turn ends close to where you meant to go.
