A little reason to celebrate

National Hug a Newsperson Day

Fun ยท April 4

A day for appreciating the reporters, editors, anchors and photographers who gather and share local and national news.

National Hug a Newsperson Day

National Hug a Newsperson Day falls on Sunday, April 4, 2027. That is 159 days away.

Somewhere right now a reporter is sitting through a long town meeting so the rest of us can read the short version over breakfast. Newspeople are the reporters, editors, photographers, anchors and producers who find out what happened and explain it clearly, often on a tight deadline.

The work is less glamorous than it looks on screen. Much of it is phone calls, public records, waiting outside courtrooms and checking a spelling for the third time. A local reporter might cover a school board vote in the morning, a house fire in the afternoon and a high school game at night. Editors read every line, trim what runs long and ask the questions that keep a story accurate.

The hug in the name can be literal for people who know each other well, though a handshake, a kind email or a simple thank you works just as nicely. Many people mark the day by reaching out to the journalist whose byline they recognize, or the meteorologist who talked them through the last big storm. Others subscribe to a local paper or pass along a story they found useful.

Asking first is the polite move with any hug, and reporters are no exception. Most of them would also be very happy to hear that someone read all the way to the last paragraph.
