Alamo Day

History · March 6

Alamo Day recalls the siege and battle at the Alamo, the old Spanish mission in San Antonio that became a lasting symbol in Texas history.

Alamo Day falls on Saturday, March 6, 2027. That is 130 days away.

The Alamo is a former Spanish mission in San Antonio, Texas. It is remembered for the battle fought there during the Texas Revolution, when a small force of Texian defenders held the mission against the Mexican army under Antonio López de Santa Anna. After a siege of about two weeks, the mission fell and nearly all of its defenders were killed.

Among the men who died were James Bowie, William Travis and Davy Crockett, names that still turn up in classrooms, songs and films. Weeks later, at San Jacinto, Texian soldiers shouted "Remember the Alamo" as they went into battle, and the phrase stuck.

The building itself is smaller than many visitors expect. Its curved stone front, with the hump-shaped top, is one of the most recognized facades in the country, and it sits right in the middle of downtown San Antonio, close to shops and busy streets. The church is what most people picture, but the original mission compound once covered a much larger area.

Marking the day tends to be quiet and historical. People read about the siege, visit the site if they are near it, or look into the lives of the people who were there, including Tejanos who fought on the Texian side and the soldiers and civilians on the other.

The mission was founded long before the battle, as a home for Spanish missionaries and the Indigenous people they converted, and that earlier history is part of the place too.
