National Bird Day is about birds: the feathered, beaked animals that share our yards, parks and skies, and how to watch them kindly.

National Bird Day falls on Tuesday, January 5, 2027. That is 70 days away.
Birds are the only living animals with feathers. Every one of them has a beak instead of teeth, and many flying birds have lightweight, air-filled bones that help them stay aloft. The rest of the design varies wildly, from tiny hummingbirds hovering at a flower to penguins that use their wings to swim.
Most people meet birds without trying. A crow on a streetlight, sparrows arguing under a cafe table, a hawk circling a highway. Once you start paying attention, the ordinary ones turn out to be busy and particular. They have favorite perches, regular routes and calls that change with the situation.
The easiest way to mark the day is to look and listen. Ten minutes at a window can turn up more than you expect, especially in the early morning when many birds are most active. A field guide or a free identification app helps put names to the shapes. Binoculars help even more, and they let you watch closely while keeping a respectful distance.
If you want to help birds directly, small changes count. A shallow dish of clean water, refreshed often, is welcome in any season. Native plants offer seeds, insects and shelter. Decals or screens on large windows can make glass easier for birds to see. Keeping pet cats indoors protects birds too.
And if you only learn one new call this week, the next walk outside will sound a little different.
