A little reason to celebrate

George Washington Carver Day

History ยท January 5

George Washington Carver Day honors the agricultural scientist and teacher known for his work with peanuts, sweet potatoes and soil improvement.

George Washington Carver Day

George Washington Carver Day falls on Tuesday, January 5, 2027. That is 70 days away.

George Washington Carver was an agricultural scientist and teacher who spent his career trying to make farming work better for people with very little. He was born into slavery, studied botany and agriculture, and taught for decades at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.

His best known idea was simple. Cotton wears out soil, and many Southern farmers grew little else. Carver encouraged them to rotate in crops like peanuts, sweet potatoes and cowpeas, which help restore nitrogen to the ground. Then he went further and worked out hundreds of uses for those crops, so farmers would have reasons to grow and sell them.

The peanut is the part most people remember, and it often gets stretched into a myth that he invented peanut butter. He did not. His real work was less tidy and more useful: recipes, bulletins and demonstrations aimed at farm families. He even took teaching on the road with a wagon outfitted as a movable school.

People mark the day by reading about his life, visiting gardens or museums that tell his story, and cooking with the crops he championed. Teachers sometimes use it to talk about soil, plants and how a scientist can choose to work for ordinary people rather than for fame.

Carver also painted, and some of his artwork was made with pigments he drew from Alabama clay.
