A day for appreciating black cats, from their glossy coats and golden eyes to the quiet company they offer the people they live with.

Black Cat Appreciation Day falls on Tuesday, August 17, 2027. That is 294 days away.
A black cat is simply a domestic cat with a coat that is black all over. It is not a breed. Many different breeds can produce solid black kittens, and plenty of ordinary mixed-breed cats wear the same color.
In person, the coat is rarely flat black. Good light can bring out a sheen, and some black cats show faint tabby stripes or a rusty brown tint after long afternoons in a sunny window. Their eyes, often gold, amber or green, stand out sharply against all that dark fur. Photographing one is famously tricky, since cameras tend to turn the cat into a shadow with two lamps for eyes.
Old superstitions have followed black cats around for a long time, and people who share a home with one usually describe something much less mysterious: a cat that wants breakfast, a warm lap and the exact spot on the bed you were about to use.
People mark the day by appreciating the black cats they already know. Owners share photos and stories, neighbors say hello to the dark shape on the porch, and some visit or support local shelters, where black cats are as curious and affectionate as any other.
A black cat asleep on a dark blanket can be nearly invisible, which is why many owners learn to check before sitting down.
