Thrift shops sell secondhand goods, usually things people have donated: clothes, dishes, books, lamps, board games with most of their pieces. Many are run by charities, and the money from sales goes toward their work. Others are independent shops that buy and resell.
Walking into one is different from walking into a regular store. Nothing is arranged by what is new this season. A wool coat hangs next to a bowling shirt. A shelf of mugs from companies that no longer exist sits beside a single crystal goblet. The stock changes constantly, because it depends entirely on what the neighborhood gave away that week.

The day can be marked from either side of the counter. Shopping is one way. Donating is the other, and it keeps the shelves full for the next person. Clean, working items in good shape are the most useful kind of donation, since shops have to sort everything that comes through the back door.
One habit experienced thrifters share is checking the housewares aisle slowly. Good kitchen tools and sturdy glass baking dishes often turn up there, priced as if nobody noticed.
