A little reason to celebrate

National Bowling Day

Hobby · Fun · The second Saturday in August

A day for ten-pin bowling: the rolling, the scoring, the rented shoes and the satisfying crash of pins at the end of the lane.

National Bowling Day

National Bowling Day falls on Saturday, August 14, 2027. That is 291 days away.

Bowling, in the form most Americans know, means ten pins standing in a triangle at the far end of a long wooden or synthetic lane, and one heavy ball with finger holes. The goal is plain. Knock down as many pins as you can.

A game is ten frames. In each of the first nine, a bowler gets up to two rolls. Clear all ten pins with the first ball and that is a strike, which ends the frame right there. Clear them with two balls and it is a spare. The tenth frame is a little different: a bowler who gets a strike or spare there earns extra rolls, up to three in all. Strikes and spares also carry bonus points from the rolls that follow, which is why scores can climb quickly for a steady bowler.

The experience is half the point. There is the clatter from neighboring lanes, the hum of the ball return, and the rented shoes, which are required because street soles can scuff the approach. House balls come in different weights, and a lighter one that fits your fingers usually rolls better than a heavy one that does not.

People mark the second Saturday in August by gathering a few friends or family members and booking a lane. Some centers lower bumpers into the gutters for children or first timers, and nobody minds if adults use them too. Keeping score by hand, the old way, is a fine skill to try, though most lanes now count for you.
