A little reason to celebrate
National Garage Sale Day
Fun · Hobby · The second Saturday in August
A day for garage sales: folding tables in the driveway, handwritten price stickers, and neighbors trading the things they no longer need.
National Garage Sale Day falls on Saturday, August 14, 2027. That is 291 days away.
Garage sales are the oldest kind of neighborhood marketplace still running on cardboard signs. A family clears out a closet, sets the contents on folding tables in the driveway, and waits to see who turns up. This observance falls on the second Saturday in August, when plenty of people are already sorting through summer clutter.
The early hours belong to the serious shoppers. They arrive with coffee and small bills, scan the tables fast, and leave with a lamp or a box of records before most of the street is awake. Later visitors move more slowly. They flip through paperbacks, test a waffle iron's cord, and ask whether the price on the bike is firm. It usually is not.
Haggling here is gentle. A quarter off, a bundle deal on three puzzles, a free mug tossed in because the buyer seemed nice. Sellers tend to care more about the empty garage at the end of the day than the money in the cash box, and buyers know it.
Some people mark the day by holding a sale of their own. Others map out a route of neighborhood signs and spend the morning driving between them. Whole blocks sometimes coordinate, which turns a quiet street into something close to a fair, with kids selling lemonade at the corner.
By afternoon the prices drop and the leftover items gather under a sign that says free. A good share of them end up in someone else's garage, waiting for next year.
Ways to celebrate
- Clear out one closet and price the extras for a driveway sale.
- Follow neighborhood signs and visit three garage sales before noon.
- Bring small bills and coins so sellers can make change easily.
- Donate unsold items to a local thrift store afterward.
- Ask neighbors about organizing a block-wide sale together.
