National Creamsicle Day falls on Saturday, August 14, 2027. That is 291 days away.
Picture a bar on a wooden stick. The outside is bright orange sherbet, and inside is a core of vanilla ice cream. That is the Creamsicle, and the pairing is the whole idea: tart citrus on the surface, something soft and sweet underneath.
Sherbet sits between ice cream and fruit ice. It has fruit and a bit of dairy, so the orange layer is lighter and tangier than the vanilla but still creamy rather than icy. The first bite is mostly orange. Then the vanilla shows up, and the two melt together into a flavor that tastes a lot like an orange milkshake.
That combination traveled well beyond the freezer aisle. Orange and vanilla together now turn up in sodas, milkshakes, cakes and coffee drinks, often just called creamsicle flavor. Plenty of people have never thought about where the name came from and still know exactly what it will taste like.
The treat is simple to approximate at home. Blend orange juice with softened vanilla ice cream, pour the mix into ice pop molds and freeze until solid. For something closer to the layered original, line the molds with orange sherbet, fill the center with vanilla ice cream and freeze again.
Eat it quickly on a hot afternoon, because the sherbet starts dripping first and tends to head straight for your wrist.
