A day for chicken wings: the small, saucy cut that turned into a bar snack, a game-day staple and a reason to need more napkins.

National Chicken Wing Day falls on Thursday, July 29, 2027. That is 275 days away.
Chicken wings are the small, bony cut from the wing of the bird, usually split into two pieces: the drumette, which looks like a tiny drumstick, and the flat, which has two thin bones running through it. There is very little meat on either, and that turns out to be the point.
Most wings are fried or baked until the skin crisps, then tossed in sauce. The classic is a buttery hot sauce, served with celery sticks and a cool dip such as blue cheese or ranch. From there the options spread out fast: honey garlic, lemon pepper, barbecue, teriyaki, dry rubs with no sauce at all. Some people judge a place entirely by its wings, and they will tell you which piece they prefer before you ask.
Eating them is a hands-on job. You pick one up, work around the bone, and set it on a growing pile. Wings tend to be ordered by the dozen and shared from a big plate, which makes them a natural fit for watching a game, hanging out at a bar, or feeding a crowd at home.
Making wings at home is easier than it looks. Patting them dry before cooking helps the skin crisp, and a hot oven can do much of what a fryer does. Toss them in sauce while they are still warm so it clings.
Flats or drumettes is still an open argument at plenty of tables.
