A day for lipstick: the bold reds, quiet nudes and everything between, plus a look at how this small tube of color is made and worn.

National Lipstick Day falls on Thursday, July 29, 2027. That is 275 days away.
Lipstick is color for the lips, usually pressed into a stick and twisted up from a tube. Underneath the shade it is mostly a blend of waxes, oils and pigments, balanced so it glides on, stays put and does not melt in a pocket.
The range is wide. Some formulas are glossy and sheer, some dry down to a flat matte, and some sit in between with a soft satin finish. A classic red can look polished at a dinner and dramatic on a stage. A tinted balm barely registers at all, which is the point for plenty of people.
People mark the day in easy ways. Some finally try the shade they bought and never wore. Others dig through a drawer and sort what they actually use from what they keep out of hope. Friends trade swatches on the backs of their hands, which is how half the world chooses a color anyway.
A lipstick that has started to smell odd or change texture has usually reached the end of its life, and tossing it is the kind thing to do for your lips. Applying a thin layer, blotting with a tissue and adding a second layer helps color last longer than one thick coat.
The bullet shape, angled at the tip, wears down to match the way each person applies it, so an old favorite ends up shaped like its owner.
