A little reason to celebrate

National Lasagna Day

Food ยท July 29

A food day for lasagna, the baked dish of wide pasta sheets layered with sauce and cheese, and for the many ways American kitchens make it.

National Lasagna Day

National Lasagna Day falls on Thursday, July 29, 2027. That is 275 days away.

Lasagna is a stack. Wide, flat sheets of pasta go into a deep pan, separated by layers of sauce, cheese and whatever else the cook has decided belongs there, and the whole thing bakes until the top browns and bubbles at the edges.

The familiar American version leans on tomato sauce with ground meat, ricotta, mozzarella and a dusting of Parmesan. There are plenty of other routes. Some cooks use a creamy white sauce, some fill the layers with spinach or roasted vegetables, and some skip meat entirely. The noodles themselves come in a few forms, including the kind that needs boiling first and the kind that softens in the oven.

It is a dish for a crowd, or for one person and several days of leftovers. Many people say it tastes even better the next day, once the layers have settled. A pan of it shows up at family dinners, potlucks and on the doorsteps of neighbors who just had a baby or moved in.

The hardest part comes after the oven. A lasagna cut straight away tends to slide apart on the plate. Letting it rest a while lets the cheese and sauce set, so each square holds its layers and comes out looking like the cross section everyone pictures.
