A little reason to celebrate

International Children's Book Day

Hobby · Family · April 2

A day for the books written for young readers, from picture books to chapter books, and for sharing them with children, marked in the United States too.

International Children's Book Day

International Children's Book Day falls on Friday, April 2, 2027. That is 157 days away.

Children's books are often the first books anyone loves. Board books get chewed, picture books get read until the spine gives up, and chapter books get carried around in backpacks for weeks. This day gives them some attention, and it is marked in the United States as well as in other countries.

The range is wider than it looks from the outside. A picture book tells a story through words and illustrations working together, and many are meant to be read aloud, so the rhythm of the sentences matters as much as the plot. Early readers use simple words and short lines for children just learning to decode. Middle grade novels give older kids longer stories, bigger casts and the occasional cliffhanger at bedtime.

Most people mark the day in ordinary ways. Families read together, teachers pull favorites off the classroom shelf, and libraries set out displays or hold story times. Adults sometimes go looking for the book they remember from their own childhood and find that the illustrations are exactly as they left them, though the giant in the story seems smaller now.

Reading aloud is the easiest place to start. A child does not need to follow every word to enjoy it. The voice, the pauses and turning the page at the right moment do much of the work, which is why the same book can be requested five nights in a row.
