A little reason to celebrate

National Walk to Work Day

Hobby ยท The first Friday in April

A day for leaving the car or bus behind and making the trip to work on foot, or walking part of the way when the whole commute is too far.

National Walk to Work Day

National Walk to Work Day falls on Friday, April 2, 2027. That is 157 days away.

The idea is simple. Instead of driving, riding or taking the train, you get to work under your own power, one step at a time. It falls on the first Friday in April, when mornings in much of the country are getting lighter and a little kinder.

Walking a commute changes how a familiar route looks. At car speed a street is a blur of signals and turn lanes. On foot it fills in: the bakery that opens early, the dog that waits at the same fence every morning, the house with the odd blue door you never noticed. You arrive having already done something, which is a pleasant way to start a workday.

Not everyone lives a walkable distance from their job, and the day allows for that. Plenty of people park a few blocks farther away, step off the bus a stop or two early, or take a walk at lunch instead. People who work from home sometimes take a loop around the block before sitting down, a sort of commute in name only. Coworkers occasionally meet at a corner and walk the last stretch together.

Comfortable shoes matter more than anything else, and a change of shoes in a bag means the good ones can stay at the desk. Checking the route the night before helps too, especially for spots where sidewalks come and go.

Friday is a fitting choice. The walk home at the end of the week tends to be slower, with a little more looking around.
