A little reason to celebrate

National Love Your Produce Manager Day

Food ยท April 2

A day for appreciating the produce manager, the person who keeps a grocery store's fruits and vegetables fresh, stocked and looking their best.

National Love Your Produce Manager Day

National Love Your Produce Manager Day falls on Friday, April 2, 2027. That is 157 days away.

Somebody decided the apples should be stacked in that neat pyramid. Somebody pulled the soft peaches before you found them. In most grocery stores, that somebody is the produce manager, and this day is a chance to notice the work.

The job starts early. Produce arrives by the crate and has to be checked, trimmed, rotated and set out before the doors open. Leafy greens get misted so they stay crisp. Bananas are watched closely, because they ripen on their own schedule and do not consult anyone. Older stock moves to the front, and anything bruised or wilting comes off the display.

A good produce manager also knows things the sign does not say. Ask which melons are ripest, what to do with an unfamiliar root vegetable, or when the local strawberries are expected, and you will often get a real answer. Many of them can tell a ripe avocado by feel faster than most of us can read a price tag.

Marking the day is simple. Say thank you in person, ask a question you have been wondering about, or try something from the section you usually walk past. Kind words passed along to a store manager tend to stick, too.

Next time the cilantro looks perky and the citrus is piled just so, it is because someone came in before sunrise and made it that way.
