A day for chips and dip: crunchy snacks, creamy or chunky dips, and the shared bowl that sits at the center of so many gatherings.

National Chip and Dip Day falls on Tuesday, March 23, 2027. That is 147 days away.
Chips and dip is one of the simplest pairings in American snacking. Something crisp and salty goes in one bowl, something soft and scoopable goes in another, and people gather around both.
The chip side has range. Potato chips bring a thin, salty crunch. Tortilla chips, made from corn, are sturdier and stand up to heavier dips. Pita chips, pretzel crisps and sliced vegetables all get drafted in too. The dip side has even more variety: salsa built on tomatoes and peppers, guacamole made from mashed avocado, French onion dip with a sour cream base, hummus from chickpeas, and warm queso that thickens as it cools.
Much of the appeal is the format. Nobody needs a plate or a plan. You stand near the bowl, talk, and reach in when the conversation pauses. It is party food, game food and late night food, and it scales from one person on a couch to a full kitchen counter.
People usually mark the day by putting out a spread, trying a dip they have never made, or settling an old argument about the best pairing. Homemade versions are easy. Onion dip can start with caramelized onions stirred into sour cream, and a basic salsa needs only chopped tomatoes, onion, cilantro, lime and salt.
The real test of any dip is the chip that breaks off halfway through the scoop. A thicker chip, or a slightly looser dip, usually solves it.
