A little reason to celebrate

Cuddly Kitten Day

Animal ยท March 23

Cuddly Kitten Day is about young cats: how they grow, how they play, and how to hold and care for them gently.

Cuddly Kitten Day

Cuddly Kitten Day falls on Tuesday, March 23, 2027. That is 147 days away.

Kittens are young cats, usually counted as kittens for their first year. They are born with their eyes closed and open them after about a week or two. Within a few weeks they are wobbling around, pouncing on their siblings and anything that moves.

Most of what looks like play is practice. Stalking a feather toy, batting a bottle cap across the floor and ambushing a sibling all build the skills an adult cat uses to hunt. Kittens also sleep a great deal, which is how they manage to spend their waking hours at full speed.

The cuddly part depends on the kitten. Some climb into a lap and purr right away. Others prefer to sit nearby and watch. Gentle handling from an early age helps kittens grow comfortable with people, and letting a kitten choose when to come over usually works better than scooping it up. Support the chest and back legs when lifting one, and set it down when it starts to squirm.

People mark the day by spending quiet time with a kitten at home, visiting a shelter, or simply sharing photos of one asleep in an unlikely position. Shelters often welcome donated towels and blankets, which kittens use for warmth and for kneading.

That kneading, the rhythmic pressing of the front paws, starts in the first days of life, when kittens knead while nursing, and many cats keep doing it as adults.
