A little reason to celebrate

National Puppy Day

Animal ยท March 23

A day about puppies: how young dogs grow, play and learn, and simple, kind ways to spend time with them or help them find homes.

National Puppy Day

National Puppy Day falls on Tuesday, March 23, 2027. That is 147 days away.

Puppies are young dogs, usually counted as puppies until they reach their first birthday or so. In that short stretch they go from tiny, sleepy newborns to clumsy, curious explorers who want to chew on everything within reach.

Newborn puppies are born with their eyes and ears closed and depend completely on their mother for warmth and milk. Within a few weeks they open their eyes, wobble around, and start playing with their littermates. That rough and tumble play teaches them how hard is too hard to bite and how to read other dogs.

A puppy's world is mostly new. Grass, stairs, doorbells and vacuum cleaners all need investigating, often with the mouth. Young puppies sleep a great deal between bursts of energy, which anyone who has watched one fall asleep mid-play will recognize.

People mark the day in gentle ways. Some share photos of their dogs as puppies, which tend to show remarkably large paws. Others visit or support a local shelter, where puppies and grown dogs alike are waiting for homes. For people already raising a puppy, a short training session or a calm walk somewhere new counts too.

If you meet a puppy out on a walk, ask the person holding the leash before reaching down. Let the puppy sniff your hand first, and keep the greeting short so it does not get overwhelmed.
