A little reason to celebrate
Christmas Card Day
Seasonal ยท December 9
A day for the Christmas card: the folded greeting, the handwritten note inside, and the old habit of mailing good wishes to people you care about.
Christmas Card Day falls on Wednesday, December 9, 2026. That is 43 days away.
A Christmas card is a folded piece of card stock with a picture on the front and a greeting inside, sent by mail to friends, family and the occasional neighbor whose last name you had to look up. The printed message does part of the work. The handwriting underneath does the rest.
The fronts run from snowy villages and red birds to glitter that travels well beyond the envelope. Some families skip the store designs and send a photo card instead, usually with everyone dressed alike. Others tuck in a typed letter that covers a whole year of news, from new jobs to the dog's knee surgery.
Most people write cards at a kitchen table with a stack of envelopes, a pen that may or may not last, and a list of addresses kept in an old address book or a phone. Receiving them is its own small ritual. Cards get propped on mantels, taped around doorframes, or clipped to a string across a window, and they stay up for weeks.
A line or two in your own words tends to mean more than a long message. Mentioning one specific memory, like a shared meal or a funny moment, makes a card feel written for that person rather than for a list.
Plenty of people keep the cards they receive, and a shoebox of them from past years makes a surprisingly good record of who was in your life and what their handwriting looked like.
Ways to celebrate
- Write a card to someone you have not talked to in a while.
- Add one specific shared memory to each card you send.
- Display the cards you receive on a string or doorframe.
- Make a homemade card with paper, markers and scraps.
- Look through old cards you have saved over the years.
