A day for the llama, the calm, woolly South American pack animal known for its long neck, banana-shaped ears and steady temperament.

National Llama Day falls on Wednesday, December 9, 2026. That is 43 days away.
Llamas are domesticated members of the camel family, raised for centuries in the Andes of South America as pack animals and for their wool. They are tall, with long necks and curved ears that swivel toward whatever has caught their interest, which is often you.
Up close, a llama is quieter than people expect. They hum to one another, a soft sound that can mean curiosity, worry or simple contentment. They live in herds and prefer company, so a single llama is rarely a happy one. Their feet have two toes with soft pads underneath, which lets them walk mountain trails without tearing up the ground.
The spitting reputation is real but mostly aimed at other llamas, usually during arguments over food or rank. A llama that has been treated well tends to be gentle and a little reserved with people. They like to sniff a visitor's face before deciding anything.
Many people meet llamas at farms, fairs and petting zoos, and some ranches offer trail walks where a llama carries the snacks. Their fiber is spun into yarn that is soft and warm, and it contains no lanolin, so it feels different from sheep's wool in the hand.
Farmers sometimes keep a llama with sheep or goats as a guard, since llamas will stand up to a coyote and sound an alarm call. It is a lot of watchfulness from an animal that also hums.
