A little reason to celebrate

Cinco de Marcho

Fun · Food · March 5

A playful taco day whose mixed-language name borrows from Cinco de Mayo and swaps in March, with tortillas, fillings and salsa at the center.

Cinco de Marcho

Cinco de Marcho falls on Friday, March 5, 2027. That is 129 days away.

Cinco de Marcho is a pun. It takes the shape of Cinco de Mayo and swaps the month for March, using a made-up Spanish-flavored spelling (the actual Spanish word for March is marzo). The result is a lighthearted name and a good reason to put tacos on the table.

The name is mostly an invitation to eat. A taco is a simple thing: a corn or flour tortilla folded around a filling. That filling can be almost anything. Seasoned beans, grilled vegetables, shredded chicken, crumbled cheese, or fish all work, and a spoonful of salsa and a squeeze of lime finish the job.

Most people keep it casual. A taco night at home is easy to set up with a few bowls of toppings and a stack of warm tortillas, and everyone builds their own. Warming tortillas in a dry pan for a few seconds a side makes them softer and less likely to crack. If you are cooking meat or fish for the filling, cook it all the way through and keep cooked fillings covered and refrigerated if they will not be eaten soon.

Tacos also travel well. A neighborhood taqueria or food truck is a fine way to try a filling you would not make yourself, and asking what the house salsa is made from usually gets a friendly answer. Pickled red onions, a handful of chopped cilantro and some thinly sliced radish cost very little and make even a plain bean taco feel finished.
