Reel Film Day falls on Friday, March 5, 2027. That is 129 days away.
Before files and streams, moving pictures lived on long ribbons of film wound around metal or plastic reels. Each strip holds a run of tiny still photographs, and a projector shines light through them fast enough that the eye reads motion.
Film comes in several widths. The wide gauges carried feature films in theaters, while narrower formats like 8mm and 16mm found their way into schools, clubs and family closets. Many households still have a box of small reels labeled in fading marker, holding birthdays and beach trips nobody has watched in years.
There is a physical quality to it that digital video rarely copies. Film has grain, a soft flicker, and the occasional scratch or dust speck dancing across the frame. A running projector makes a steady clatter, and the reel visibly shrinks on one arm while it grows on the other. You can hold a strip up to a window and see the actual pictures.
People enjoy it by seeking out theaters that still project prints, digging out old family reels, or trying a small film camera. Old film can be brittle, so handle it by the edges and keep it cool and dry. If a reel smells sharply of vinegar, the film base is breaking down, and it should be kept away from other reels and looked at by a transfer service sooner rather than later.
That vinegar smell has a fitting name among archivists: vinegar syndrome.
