A little reason to celebrate

National Day of Unplugging

Hobby · Family · The first Friday in March

A day for setting down phones and screens for a while and spending the time on people, hobbies and the world nearby.

National Day of Unplugging

National Day of Unplugging falls on Friday, March 5, 2027. That is 129 days away.

Unplugging means putting the phone in a drawer, closing the laptop and letting the screens go dark for a stretch of time. On the first Friday in March, people try it on purpose, for an evening, a full day or just a long afternoon.

The first hour can feel strange. Hands reach for a pocket that has nothing in it. Then the quiet starts to fill with other things: a conversation that runs longer than usual, a book picked up where it was left months ago, a walk with no podcast playing.

Families often make it a shared project. Board games come out of the closet, someone cooks a meal that takes real attention, and kids discover that grownups also remember how to draw. Hobbies that need two hands do especially well here. Knitting, woodworking, baking and puzzles all leave no room for scrolling.

It helps to plan a little. A paper list of what to do, a printed map, or a note to friends saying you will be offline keeps the day from turning into a search for the charger. Some people set the devices in a basket by the door so they stay out of sight.

When the screens come back on, the messages will be waiting, mostly the same as they would have been. The pencil sketch or the finished jigsaw will still be on the table.
