A little reason to celebrate

National Comic Book Day

Hobby · Fun · September 25

A day for comic books: the stapled issues, collected volumes and panel-by-panel stories that readers have long loved, traded and reread.

National Comic Book Day

National Comic Book Day falls on Saturday, September 25, 2027. That is 333 days away.

Comic books tell stories in panels. Pictures carry the action, speech balloons carry the talk, and the empty strip between panels (artists call it the gutter) is where the reader's imagination fills in what happened.

The classic form is the thin stapled issue, a single chapter of a longer tale. Many readers wait for the next one the way others wait for a television episode. Others prefer collected editions and graphic novels, which gather a whole story between two covers and sit more comfortably on a shelf.

Superheroes are the famous part, but the shelves hold much more. There are comics about detectives, ghosts, talking animals, family life, history and the quiet business of growing up. Newspaper strips, manga and small handmade zines all share the same basic tools of panel, picture and word.

Reading one is its own skill. The eye jumps around the page, a big splash panel slows everything down, and a single wordless square can land harder than a paragraph. Rereading often turns up a background joke or a clue drawn in plain sight the first time.

People mark the day by reading, of course, but also by digging out old boxes of issues, visiting a local comic shop or library, or trying to draw a short strip of their own. Four panels and a stick figure are enough to start, and plenty of well-loved comics began about that simply.
