Food ยท The Saturday after the third Thursday in March
A day for the corndog: a hot dog on a stick, dipped in cornmeal batter and fried until golden, a fixture of fairs and ballparks.

National Corndog Day falls on Saturday, March 20, 2027. That is 144 days away.
A corndog is a hot dog on a stick, coated in a thick cornmeal batter and fried until the outside turns crisp and golden. It is one of the few foods designed to be eaten while walking, which explains why it shows up wherever people wander: fairgrounds, carnivals, ballparks and boardwalks.
The first bite is mostly crust, slightly sweet from the cornmeal. Then comes the hot dog, salty and soft, and the two balance each other well. Mustard is the classic partner. Ketchup has its loyal followers, and some people skip both. The stick does real work too, since it keeps fingers clear of hot oil and grease.
Most people eat their corndogs from a food stand, but they are easy to find at home as well. Frozen corndogs heat up in an oven or air fryer in a few minutes. Cooks who want to make them from scratch stir up a batter of cornmeal, flour, milk and egg, dip skewered hot dogs, and fry them in oil. Because the batter contains raw egg and flour, it should be cooked all the way through until firm and golden, with no wet spots near the stick.
Smaller versions, often called corn dog nuggets or mini corndogs, skip the stick and come by the handful. They tend to vanish from a plate faster than anyone expects, and the full size one still holds the title of easiest food to eat while holding a drink in the other hand.
