Snowman Burning Day marks the turn from winter toward spring by sending a snowman, real or symbolic, off in flames or a final melt.

Snowman Burning Day falls on Saturday, March 20, 2027. That is 144 days away.
A snowman made of straw, paper or old cloth, set alight as a way of saying goodbye to winter. That is the picture at the heart of this day. It is a send-off for the cold months, held at the point when many people are ready for longer evenings and softer ground.
The idea of burning a winter figure is a familiar one. Many cultures have some version of it, a straw effigy or bonfire that stands in for the dark season and is cleared away to make room for the next. Here the stand-in is the snowman, the cheerful round figure with a carrot nose and stick arms that children build in the yard every snowy year.
A real snowman does not burn, of course. It slumps, drips and loses its hat over the course of a few mild afternoons. So people mark the day with stand-ins. Some build a small snowman from paper or twigs for a backyard fire pit. Some draw one and toss it into a fireplace. Others skip the flames entirely and simply watch the last yard snowman sink into a puddle, which gets the same message across more slowly.
If there is a fire involved, it works best when it is small, supervised and allowed by local rules. A cup of something warm helps, as does a list of what you plan to do once the weather turns. The carrot, at least, can be saved.
