A little reason to celebrate

National Daisy Day

Nature ยท January 28

A day for the daisy, the familiar white and yellow flower of lawns, meadows and roadsides, and for noticing it, growing it and picking a few.

National Daisy Day

National Daisy Day falls on Thursday, January 28, 2027. That is 93 days away.

A daisy looks like one flower, but it is really many. The yellow center is a crowd of tiny flowers packed together, and each white petal around the edge is its own small flower too. Botanists call this a composite flower head, and the daisy family is one of the largest groups of flowering plants.

The common daisy grows low in lawns and open grass, often in places nobody planted it. Its name comes from an old English phrase meaning "day's eye," because the flower opens in the morning and closes at night. Larger cousins, like the oxeye and the Shasta daisy, stand taller in meadows and garden borders.

Most people mark the day simply. They pick a few from a patch where picking is fine, put them in a glass of water, or plant a pot of them on a porch. Children make daisy chains by splitting one stem with a thumbnail and threading the next one through. Some people still pull petals one at a time to settle the question of "loves me, loves me not," which is a lot of responsibility to give a flower.

Daisies handle sun well and ask for little beyond decent soil and a drink now and then. Bees and other pollinators visit them often, so a clump left unmowed at the edge of a yard tends to stay busy.

At dusk, a lawn of common daisies quietly folds itself shut, petals raised over the yellow centers.
